Here's how to get on the local news and share your expertise
It's waaaaay easier than you think (even if you don't want to be on camera - local news NEEDS experts!)
Most busy practice owners assume that getting featured on the local news requires PR firms, insider connections, or years of media experience. Nope. Local journalists need sources—and they need them fast.
Unlike national media, where stories are planned weeks in advance, local reporters often don’t get their assignments until the same day or maybe the day before. That means when they need an expert, they don’t have time to hunt for one. They rely on a go-to list—a rolodex of reliable, easily reachable experts they can call when they need a quick quote or an interview.
Here’s how you become their go-to:
Find your local reporters. Watch the evening news, check your local paper, or scan social media. Those articles all have a byline that you can click to directly email the journalist.
Reach out directly. Email them, DM them, or—if they make it available—text them. Keep it simple:
“Hey [Name], I’m Dr. [Your Name], a local [what you do] specializing in [topic]. If you ever need a quick expert comment on kids’ health, I’m happy to help. Best way to reach me is [your email/phone].”
Stay proactive. When a relevant news story breaks—flu season, RSV spikes, mental health concerns—don’t wait to be called. Send them a quick pitch.
“Hey [Name], I saw your recent piece on [topic]. If you’re covering this further, I’d love to offer insights on [angle]. Let me know if I can help!”
That’s it. No gatekeepers, no PR budget. Just showing up, being useful, and making their job easier. Do this a few times, and when the next story breaks, guess who they’ll call?
You.
It’s that easy. Go find 5 journalists, message them, and watch the requests for comment start coming in!
